Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP)
STAT MedEvac has adopted a Safety Management System (SMS), which is a quality management approach to controlling risk. As part of their SMS, STAT MedEvac has become the first Helicopter Emergency Medical Service operator to participate in the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). According to Jim Blakley, the Safety and Risk Assessment Manager at STAT MedEvac, an “ASAP is the cornerstone of the safety programs for several of the major air carriers and is the key to the successful safety record that they enjoy.”
According to the FAA’s website, “the goal of the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) is to enhance aviation safety through the prevention of accidents and incidents. Its focus is to encourage voluntary reporting of safety issues and events that come to the attention of employees of certain certificate holders.” As a member of an Event Review Committee (ERC), STAT MedEvac management cooperates with the FAA and associated trade in identifying safety events and implementing corrective measures in order to reduce any opportunity for safety to be compromised. The ASAP program collects, analyzes, presents and distributes the information from hazard reports, risk analysis and system audits performed at STAT MedEvac. This allows for feedback to the FAA and individuals at STAT MedEvac in order to prevent the reoccurrence of an event.
