Firework Safety Tips

It’s that time of the year again… firework season! While fireworks are a fun summer tradition, fireworks have led to a heavy amount of summer injuries. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 10,000 firework-related injuries were treated in emergency rooms in the U.S. last year, including 11 firework-related deaths. • Younger children shouldn’t be in close contact with fireworks.
  • Never use fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

5 Ways to Stay Hydrated

Since childhood, we have been told that we should be drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, but environmental factors and individual health needs could change your body’s needs during the summer especially. If you’re going to include more outdoor events or physical activities in your routine, it’s important that you continue to keep your body hydrated. Here are five ways to help increase your water intake:

  1. Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. Starting off the day with a full glass of water will not only help your body to feel energized, but it will also give your metabolism a boost to get your day on track.
  1. Use your phone to keep you updated. Whether it be an app focused on your movement and nutrition, or manually setting alarms to keep […]

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in America, but it’s also one of the most preventable cancers. With summer approaching and more time spent outdoors, it’s a great time to discuss not only the dangers of unprotected sun exposure, but also the ways we can take preventative measures to protect our skin.

Most cases of skin cancer are caused by exposure to ultraviolet light.  UV light not only comes from the sun but is also found artificially in indoor tanning beds.  According to SkinCancer.org, there is a 75% increased risk for developing melanoma if you start using an indoor tanning bed before the age of 35.

If you’re planning on spending a lot of time outdoors this summer, it’s imperative that you […]

First Comprehensive Assessment of Pediatric Prehospital Care Launches May 1

First Comprehensive Assessment of Pediatric Prehospital Care Launches May 1

National assessment aims to improve prehospital care for acutely ill and injured children

While the majority of emergency medical services (EMS) and fire-rescue agencies provide emergency care to children, pediatric calls are rare. In fact, because many agencies see fewer than eight pediatric patients per month, EMS clinicians often don’t feel comfortable or confident when caring for children. Pediatric readiness can reduce anxiety and increase confidence, and research suggests it may also improve outcomes. But what is pediatric readiness, and how do you know if your agency is really ready to take care of children?

The National Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Project is launching an assessment Wednesday, May 1, that can answer these questions—and more. The goal of this national project is to […]
