Shop with a Hero

Shining a light on three standout STAT MedEvac employees this holiday season, we want to say thank you to Jennifer Luxbacher, Elizabeth Myers, and Ciara Rupp, who participated in ‘Shop with a Hero’ this week.   

 

 

Shop with a Hero provides children with the opportunity to be paired up with a hero (law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS, military personnel and/or medical personnel) for a shopping spree with gifts for themselves and/or family members. Once the shopping is done, the hero and children wrap the gifts and enjoy a meal, provided by Walmart. The children who participate in Shop with a Hero are selected by school personnel from socials that are included in the program. School personnel select participants through social media to participate in the shopping excursion.

Regional Air Medical Services Working Cooperatively for Patient Care

University Hospitals’ air medical service, UH AirMed, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) STAT MedEvac program have formalized a cooperative to facilitate launching the closest medical helicopter to scene run requests in the eastern Ohio/western Pennsylvania region.

STAT MedEvac has staffed helicopter bases in Crawford, Erie, and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania, as well as Jefferson and Mahoning counties in Ohio. UH AirMed has staffed helicopter bases in Geauga and Medina counties.  Both agencies receive requests from first responders in the Ohio-Pennsylvania bordering counties.

UH AirMed and STAT MedEvac are committed to providing patients requiring air medical services from a scene with the closest available medical helicopter. Regardless of which air medical dispatch center receives the flight request, the closest available resource will be launched. Looking back on the 40th Anniversary Celebration of STAT MedEvac, we can’t thank everyone enough who shared in this wonderful event. Over 200 former and current staff, physicians, nurses, comm specs and honored guests and their significant others were in attendance at Acrisure Stadium on Friday, November 8th, to celebrate together. While it was lovely to take a walk down memory lane, the night was also about fundraising for the Pittsburgh Emergency Medicine Foundation.

Thanks to everyone who attended, the sponsors and the committee of volunteers who worked on this event over the last few months. EMS and Emergency Medicine Pioneer, Mentor, and Friend

The Center for Emergency Medicine (CEM) and STAT MedEvac along with the greater Pittsburgh community mourn the loss of Dr. Ronald D. Stewart, our founder and emergency medicine giant. Dr. Stewart, who began his career in Nova Scotia, played a pivotal role in establishing emergency medical systems both locally and nationally. After training in emergency medicine in Los Angeles, he joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1978, where he founded the Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania. His foundation gave us the opportunity to not only advanced emergency care and research but also became instrumental in EMS training and innovation.

  • Shannon played a key role in getting the STATMedEvac Peer Support group up and running, doing this made her incredibly happy!!
  • She has two girls, Amelia, 22 and Elise, 17 and two dogs, Theo and Remi.
  • Shannon loves music, spending time with family and friends, and traveling.
  • She is an Advanced Open Water diver.

When it comes to fire responders, they come in all shapes and sizes… Including the feline form! For National Cat Day, we wanted to feature an “employee” who is not only an employee favorite at Jefferson County 911, but a major morale booster. Allow us to introduce you to Cruiser!  

A Q/A with Cruiser the Cat: 

Stat: How long have you been working for Jefferson County 911? 

Cruiser: Since June of 2020. I  hold the title as youngest employee.  Deputy Director and 911 Coordinator, Chris Clark’s family cat had a litter of kittens and only one was left. The pandemic was in full swing, and Chris brought me to the 911 center to interact with the staff. They loved me so much that I have been here ever since.
