Migraines impact over 37 million men, women, and children in the United States. While much of the adult population has experienced a headache in their life, not everyone has experienced a headache disorder, such as a migraine. June is National Migraine and Headache Month; Shining a spotlight on these painful experiences. Â
Headaches and migraines are among the most common disorders of the human nervous system. Symptoms range from dull and throbbing head pain, piercing cluster pain, neck pain and tension, nausea, and hypersensitivity to light, sound and smells. When left untreated, chronic migraines can lead to depression, isolation, and self-medication. It’s extremely important that if you fear you have chronic migraines to consult a doctor. Â
Severe symptoms include:Â
- Two or more headaches a weekÂ
- The need for more than the recommended dose of over-the-counter pain reliever for reliefÂ
- Headaches that are disablingÂ
- Headache pattern changes or headaches worsenÂ
If you have experienced any of these symptoms, now would be a good time to consult with a doctor about a plan of action. Â
While there is no cure for migraines, there are some steps that you can take to help relieve the systems, other than over-the-counter medications:Â
- Drinking plenty of waterÂ
- Putting an ice pack or cool cloth on your foreheadÂ
- Resting with your eyes closedÂ
- Staying in a dark, quiet room Â
Also, some lifestyle changes can play a factor in helping the situation. Exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, and reducing stress can all help to prevent the symptoms from increasing. Â
